Need Research? Think Independently

Gone are the days where organizations employed ‘Market Research Managers’ to commission, manage and utilize market research carried out by external agencies; in fact it is very rare these days that a company has such a position. Originally the focus of market research was on marketing issues, and the main users of market research were the marketing departments of large companies. Over time its use has broadened to a wide range of business issues, and today market research is used by a broad spectrum of functions in a wide range of small as well as large organisations. In deed, in recent years, the use of market research has developed very healthily outside the traditional confines of the Marketing and Market Research departments, thanks to the relationships built and skills offered by independent consultants and small/medium research agencies.

The key findings were as follows:

1. Market research is now a highly valued information source, which has become more useful in the past five years

2. Market research is being commissioned by a wide variety of client functions other than Marketing and Market Research. The client base has broadened considerably and this trend seems likely to continue, as market research becomes increasingly a mainstream rather than a specialist tool

3. 6. The perception of large/global research agencies tends to be much more associated with offering standard off-the-shelf solutions rather than understanding the problem. They are seen to delegate to juniors and provide information rather than insight. This does not project the right image for the healthy future development of the industry

    I’m not sure if you are offering suggestions or stating fact, but I don’t agree that independent consultants are valued for their creativity while large agencies are seen as stodgy, slow moving and unable to understand the big picture. All you have to do to see that this is not an accurate view of research buyers perceptions is to look at where they are spending their money. It’s not at the small independant firms, but the large ones.

    I do think that there is defintely a distinction to be made between the quality of return from small research agencies and consultancies. However, I would argue the case that sometimes it is ‘horses for courses’ and large agencies can be culpible for offering ‘off the shelf solutions’ far too often.

    The action is not necessarily where the budgets are spent. When collecting quotations for market research, the variation of offers can be up to a factor 10. For example, if you have a market research question for the Russian market, you could ask a quote from an international research firm, based in NY, or contract a local company. That’s likely to produce a difference of at least one zero. The international research company may very well use the same local company, but the difference in cost results from overheads, quality controls, …

    Some large consulting firms use so much resources on customer acquisition that you know you’ve already used the first year’s budget on the quotation.

    If your market research needs are many and frequent, such as for example with industry associations, managing your our research needs, using smaller companies in combination with web-based intelligence and surveys can be a very powerful combination.
